Since 1973, design and technology is taught at Kunstuniversität Linz – formerly grouped with General Art and Art Studies, today as the Diploma Programme design & technology / teacher training programme – and thus is one of the University’s oldest disciplines.
The Austrian university reform of 2002 for the first time established an independent, superordinate organisational unit (the Department of Design and Technology), which in its turn, together with three other technical-artistic departments, makes up the Institute of Space and Design.
This restructuring has facilitated the concentration of creative assets within the Institute, generated manifold activity areas for teaching and research, established the Department as a co-operation partner vis-à-vis institutional and private partners from educational and cultural facilities and the economy and moreover involved it significantly in social developments of relevance for society as a whole.
The most recent initiative in this respect is the course Technology for Girls offered by the Department of design and technology since the 2007/08 academic year.
