ConstructLab is the description of a collaborative construction practice working on both ephemeral and permanent projects. Unlike the conventional architectural process in which the architect designs and the builder builds, in constructLab, the project’s conception and construction are brought together. The designer builds and continues to design on site.
The idea behind constructLab’s practice is also to rediscover a constructive intelligence in materials themselves, to design at the same time as we handle the material. In foreground are low-tech and simplicity. It is not about technical prowess, but rather finding a common sense approach whose building techniques can be appropriated and used by everyone.
Der öffentliche Raum ist für alle da? Wenn wir hier handeln, wird es für einen kurzen Zeitraum auch unserer. Aber wir teilen den Raum mit vielen, wer sind die vielen, die anderen?

Jede(r) Studierende nimmt die Rolle eines Protagonisten des öffentlichen Raums ein. Beruf oder Berufung, beides ist möglich. Der Workshop startet mit einer kurzen und performativen Vorstellungsrunde: “Wer bin ich?”
Zwei Protagonisten treffen nun aufeinander und beschließen ein Projekt zusammen zu machen. Vielleicht tragen sie schon seit langem eine Idee mit sich herum oder sie finden ganz spontan ein Problem, was es zu lösen gäbe: sie wollen gestalten! Sie wollen etwas bauen! Die Idee entwickelt sich ganz schnell im Laufe des Nachmittags und wird mit den einfachsten zur Verfügung stehenden Mitteln ausprobiert. Drinnen oder Draußen! Am Ende des Tages machen wir eine Präsentationsrunde, die Arbeiten werden gemeinsam ausprobiert!
Alexander Römer
studied carpentry and architecture. He founded ConstructLab as a forum for participative design-build projects in 1998. In 2005 he joined the Parisian collective EXYZT and worked on many projects among others the French contribution to the 10th architecture biennial in Venice 2006. With the idea of ConstructLab and its network of designers, builders, architects, photographs, graphic designers, gardeners or cooks he initiated and designed numerous projects internationally.
