Neue Professorin für Critical Data

Manuela Naveau, Lektorin an der Kunstuniversität Linz, Abteilung Interface Cultures, ist ab Oktober 2020 neue Professorin für Critical Data. KunststudentInnen und kreativ Forschende und ihr Zugang zur digitalen Welt sind von großem Wert für die Untersuchung, kritische Vermittlung und Verwendung von Daten, datenverarbeitenden Systemen und dem damit verbundenen Wissen. Sie machen sichtbar und kommentieren nicht nur wie Systeme der Digitalisierung funktionieren, sondern auch wie sie nicht funktionieren. Anhand der Analyse künstlerischer Arbeiten an der Schnittstelle von Digitaler Kunst, sowie Big Data und Künstlicher Intelligenz als auch Ethik, Philosophie und politischem bzw. sozialem Engagement untersuchen wir, welchen Platz die Gesellschaft als Individuum oder Teil einer Community im Bezug zu KI (Künstliche Intelligenz) einnehmen kann. Critical Data hinterfragt den gesellschaftlichen Umgang mit Technologie und erforscht die künstlerischen Welten und Utopien zwischen Versprechung, Manipulation und Verschwörung im digitalen Kosmos, denn künstlich lernende Systeme sind so gut wie ihre Datensätze sind: Es gilt die Agenda hinter Daten und Algorithmen zu untersuchen und generell einen anderen, neuen Zugang zu Technik zu vermitteln, der das gelernte Vertrauen in präzise und korrekte technische Verfahren geschlossener Systeme hinterfragt und um ein kritisches Bewusstsein gegenüber KI erweitert. Wer, wenn nicht junge kunstschaffende Personen der Abteilung Interface Cultures sind prädestiniert für diese kritische Auseinandersetzung. Manuela Naveau wurde am 01.09.1972 in Linz geboren. Sie ist Künstlerin, Forscherin, Wissenschafterin und Kuratorin der Ars Electronica, wo sie gemeinsam mit dem Künstlerischen Geschäftsführer Gerfried Stocker die Abteilung Ars Electronica Export entwickelte und operativ fast 18 Jahre leitete. Naveau unterrichtet an der Kunstuniversität Linz und übernahm Lehraufträge an der Paris Lodron Universität in Salzburg und an der Donau-Universität Krems. Ihr Buch "Crowd and Art - Kunst und Partizipation im Internet" wurde 2017 im transcript Verlag, Deutschland, veröffentlicht. Das Buch basiert auf ihrer Dissertation, für die sie 2016 vom Bundesministerium für Wissenschaft, Forschung und Wirtschaft mit dem Award of Excellence ausgezeichnet wurde. They make visible and comment not only on how systems in the digital realm work, but also on how they do not work. By analyzing artistic works at the interface of Digital Art, Big Data and Artificial Intelligence as well as ethics, philosophy and political or social commitment, we investigate the place society - as an individual or part of a community - can take in relation to AI (Artificial Intelligence). Critical Data questions society's handling of technology and explores the artistic worlds and utopias between promise, manipulation and conspiracy in the digital cosmos, because artificially learning systems are as good as their data sets are: The agenda behind data and algorithms needs to be examined and, in general, a different, new approach to technology needs to be provided, which questions the learned trust in precise and correct technical procedures of closed systems and extends it by a critical awareness in relation to AI. Who, if not young artists of the Interface Cultures department are predestined for this critical examination.  Manuela Naveau was born on 01.09.1972 in Linz. She is an artist, researcher, scientist and curator at Ars Electronica, where she developed the Ars Electronica Export Department together with the Artistic Director Gerfried Stocker and headed it operationally for almost 18 years. Naveau teaches at the University of Art in Linz and has held lectureships at the Paris Lodron University in Salzburg and at the Danube University Krems. Her book "Crowd and Art - Art and Participation on the Internet" was published in 2017 by transcript Verlag, Germany. The book is based on her dissertation, for which she received the Award of Excellence from the Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economy in 2016.
