Painting & Graphic Art

The programme Painting & Graphic Art on the one hand teaches students the technical skills of the profession and on the other hand provides thematic focuses to stimulate curiosity to deal with the medium in an unconventional fashion. The tradition of this classic artistic medium is explored while the access to new media and methods is likewise integrated into the programme. Excursions disclose an overview of the international exhibition scene. During the programme, students may also acquire practical experience through involvement in exhibitions, competitions and art design for construction projects.

The Class
Since spring 1998, Ursula Hübner has been heading the Painting & Graphic Art class at Kunstuniversität Linz. Originally conducted as a master class, the restructuring of Austria’s universities and a new curriculum for the Institute led to the integration of the class into the superordinate institutional framework of Fine Art and Cultural Studies. Students enrol in the painting class as their main subject and then can choose additional courses from a wide range of supplementary classes.
During the entire programme, drawing and painting are intensively nurtured; a critical position is developed through group discussions and individual talks. In many cases, it becomes clear that the student wishes for a wider study scope, and thus other media such as video, photography, performance, etc. are employed as well. It is the objective of the curriculum to provide a basis for graduates to stand on their own as artists and fully develop their individual abilities.

The class is housed at the former premises of a Jesuit monastery close to the main square (Hauptplatz) in the centre of Linz, which also hosts the Rectorate and Library of Kunstuniversität Linz.
