Admission / Procedure

By submitting an exposé of their research projects, interested students may apply to persons duly authorised by the University (venia docendi) for dissertation supervision (where applicable, an authorised second supervisor may be additionally chosen from outside Kunstuniversität Linz). Students may enrol as soon as confirmation of supervision has been formally obtained. On the basis of the exposé submitted, each project is developed and planned in its entirety in the course of the first semester together with the main supervisor.
Instead of a curriculum to follow over the next five semesters, comprehensive, individual supervision and assistance are agreed between student and supervisor. Compliance with this catalogue of activities as well as the mode of its implementation are documented at the end of each semester by means of progress reports. PhD candidates are assigned the status of a junior researcher (“early-stage researcher”). Regular participation in scientific talks, presentations at congresses and conferences, the realisation of artistic work but also practical teaching tasks are thus all elements to be complied with by the student.
After the successful defence of their dissertation, graduates are awarded the academic degree “Doctor of Philosophy” (PhD).

Student Counselling

Interested parties can acquire advance information about the PhD programme at Kunstuniversität Linz on specially set-up “information days” (counselling appointments).
These are held on a regular basis multiple times per year and provide information concerning the following topics:

  • admission prerequisites
  • overall structure of the PhD programme
  • individual / thematic counselling

Admission Prerequisites

Attestation of general university entrance qualification for admission to doctorate programmes is considered provided by submitting proof of the successful completion of a thematically relevant master or diploma course, of a thematically relevant diploma or master degree of a university of applied sciences or of another, equivalent programme completed at a duly accredited Austrian or foreign post-secondary educational institution.
The thematic relevance of a previously completed programme as well as any potentially required supplementary tests are determined by the Vice-Rector for Teaching (acc. to Art. 76 of the Austrian Universities Act).
In addition, persons aiming to enrol for a PhD programme are required to submit to the University both an exposé of their respective research project and a confirmation of supervision issued by a duly authorised person.

Supervision

The minimum duration of the PhD programme at Kunstuniversität Linz is 6 semesters.
As a rule, doctorate students work mainly on their respective project and are assisted in this task by their supervisor. Persons aiming to enrol for a PhD programme are required to submit to Kunstuniversität Linz both an exposé of their research project and confirmation of supervision issued by a duly authorised person.
On the basis of their authorisation to teach (venia docendi), university professors according to Art. 94 para. 2 lit. 1 of the Austrian Universities Act (German acronym “UG”), professors emeriti/emeritae according to Art. 94 para. 1 lit. 7 of UG, retired university professors according to Art. 94 para. 1 lit. 8 of UG, university lecturers listed in Art. 94 para. 2 lit. 2 of UG as well as associate lecturers (“PrivatdozentInnen”) habilitated at University of Art and Design Linz (according to Art. 102 of UG) are authorised to act as supervisors to doctorate students.
If a co-operation agreement regarding PhD student supervision was concluded with another institution, duly authorised persons of this institution are equally entitled to act as supervisors.
