Das Projekt untersucht die Geschichte der Zombie-Figur. Im Zentrum steht die Frage, wie heute vergessene, großteils nach der Haitianischen Revolution in Frankreich publizierte Texte mit der Figur Wissen über den karibischen Raum produzierten und gleichzeitig Vorstellungen von Europa nachhaltig prägten. Popkulturelle Zombie-Imaginarien werden im Projekt zum Anlass genommen, um aktuelle gesellschaftliche Diskurse aus der Perspektive einer transatlantischen Verflechtungsgeschichte neu zu situieren. Anhand von erstmals wieder in Erinnerung gerufenen Texten zeigt das Projekt auf, wie verschüttete, stereotype Deutungsmuster die Gegenwart formen.
This research project aims to flesh out the multiple functions and structures of historical zombie-narratives from the 17th century onward in a transatlantic perspective. Focusing mainly on popular print culture from 19th century France - from children’s literature to scientific texts -, the project examines the production and impact of the zombie figure within the context of Vodou representations, discourses on slave labour and the abolition of enslavement, funeral rites and concepts of body and soul. The project inquires how the zombie circulated between Europe, the Caribbean, Brasil, the US and West Africa and how it has been haunting Europe since colonial times.
