This two-day workshop with Helen Palmer is designed to guide doctoral candidates in intermediate and more advanced stages of their projects in their academic writing and presentation, focusing on creating structured and concise content for effective delivery.
We will discuss the craft of academic writing and presenting your work with confidence to an audience. Through individual and group feedback, analysis, and discussion, doctoral students will gain skills and confidence in articulating and theorising their own work, developing a strong academic voice, and synthesising their work into conference paper and presentation formats.
Target group
Doctoral candidates who are already in intermediate and more advanced stages of their projects and who would like to refine their skills in developing and writing presentations.
Schedule
Day 1: Monday, April 8, 2024, 9.30 am – 4.30 pm
sentence / paragraph / essay structure, articulating your argument, academic writing style, references, individual feedback sessions
Day 2: Tuesday, April 9, 2024, 9.30 am – 2.30 pm
presenting your work to an audience, conference paper style, presentation skills, individual feedback sessions
Preparation
Please send a sample of your work (one page maximum) until the latest March 22, 2024. Include which stage of your doctoral studies you are at and what event (e.g. conference, thesis defense, etc.) you are preparing for (if applicable).
Workshop leader
Dr. Helen Palmer is a writer, theorist and lecturer from Northern England. She is the author of Deleuze and Futurism: A Manifesto for Nonsense (Bloomsbury, 2014), Queer Defamiliarisation:
Writing, Mattering, Making Strange (Edinburgh University Press, 2020), and the novel Pleasure Beach (Prototype, 2023). Her work on defamiliarisation has recently featured in More Posthuman Glossary (Bloomsbury, 2022). She has taught across the disciplines of comparative literature, theory, diffractive creativities and creative writing at Goldsmiths University of London, Kingston University London, TU Wien and ETH Zürich.

You can register to the workshop, if you are enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna or University of Arts Linz.
Please register until the latest March 22, 2024 via doktoratszentrum@akbild.ac.at with the subject "Workshop April 2024" and a current certification of enrollment.
The workshop is limited for max. 15 persons (first come, first serve).
