die architektur

The studies of architecture at the University of Art and Design Linz – die architektur – are dedicated to current social topics related to achitecture, and spatial development in general. Socially responsible architecture and cities and settlements worth living in are the main objective. The studies are guided by timely and critical examination of culture, art, technique, as well as the aspirations of ambitious and dedicated students. The content of the bachelor program is basic questions and ideas of space and body, function, construction, material, atmosphere and form are taught. The master program expands upon design competence along complex issues and enlarges the focus on larger scales.

die architektur at the University of Art and Design Linz offers comprehensive and practical training for the manifold tasks in the field of architecture and spatial planning. With its four studios conception and design / urbanism / BASEhabitat / schulRAUMkultur, the smallest architecture faculty in Austria gained a nationally as well as internationally recognized profile.

Designing space comes with a social responsibility. Therefore, ecological, economical and social aspects of architecture and urbanism are integral parts of the architecture studies in Linz. The work on form, material, construction and atmosphere is acompanied by a critical discussion of current societal and political challenges. die architektur considers itself a lab for social and artistic processes: from thorough analyses and theory to conceptual and practical (material, construction) experiments, and from the design process to actual construction and 1:1 interventions, whereby teaching, research and practise are tightly intertwined.

Aside from professional skills, die architektur focuses on the social competence of students and cooperative work. Exchange and collaboration among students and teachers are decisive for the high quality of the architecture studies in Linz. The spaces in the new building reflect that: the open structure of the studios, workshops, kitchen and lecture room – with a view of the main square and the river danube – offers an ideal atmosphere for exploring, thinking and designing. The reasonable size of the department allows work in small teams and intesive and personal mentoring. The openness between the different years underlines the focus on collaborative work and learning from each other. Cooperations with architectural offices, private companies and public institutions facilitate a practical orientation and a direct contact with experts from different fields. The active involvement in the organisation and contents of conferences and symposia offers students insights in theoretical discussions. Our fieldtrips (local and abroad) are a renowned staple of each academic year.
