Interface Cultures „Root Node“ is a site-specific interactive installation. It involves stacked layers of disassembled remote controllers that are strung together by conductive rods and implanted in the ground. Whenever the root of the device becomes damp, nodes can be generated due to the conductivity of the earth, which here acts as an interface. That in turn triggers the soundscape, which is constructed out of pulsed signals.
Inspired by Niklas Luhmann’s notion of structural coupling and the materiality of communication, „Root Node“ also refers to the topmost section of a tree data structure in computer science. The device functions as a reconfiguration of the exorbitant existence of techno narratives; as a poem depicting the metabolic process of signals; as “the reconstruction of deconstruction”; as a posthuman totem of worship… Exhibition at: IC at ars electronica 2014, Linz, Austria „Root Node“ (Wurzelknoten) ist eine ortsgebundene interaktive Installation, die aus aufeinander gestapelten Schichten demontierter Fernbedienungen besteht, die durch leitfähige Stäbe aneinandergefügt und im Boden verankert sind. Wenn die Wurzel der Installation feucht wird, können durch die Leitfähigkeit des Bodens, der hier als Schnittstelle fungiert, Datenknoten gebildet werden. Dies löst wiederum eine aus gepulsten Signalen geschaffene Klanglandschaft aus.
Inspiriert durch das Konzept der strukturellen Kopplung (Niklas Luhmann) und die Materialität der Kommunikation bezieht sich „Root Node“ auch auf den obersten Abschnitt einer Baumdatenstruktur in der Informatik. Die Vorrichtung funktioniert als Rekonfiguration der maßlosen Existenz technologischer Narrative; als ein den metabolischen Prozess von Signalen darstellendes Gedicht; als „Rekonstruktion der Dekonstruktion“; als posthumanes Totem der Anbetung …
